Hattie McDaniel became the first Black person to win an Academy Award when she received Best Supporting Actress for Gone with the Wind at the 12th Academy Awards in 1940. She was not permitted to sit with her castmates due to the venue's segregation policy. McDaniel sat at a segregated table at the back of the room during the ceremony. Her role as Mammy has been criticized for perpetuating stereotypes. The Academy presented her Oscar posthumously to Howard University in 1999 after the original w
