The New York Islanders have signed center Bo Horvat to an eight-year contract less than a week after acquiring him in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks. The team announced the contract Sunday, after their first practice following the all-star break.

Horvat will join an Islanders team in the midst of a dogfight for a playoff position in the Eastern Conference. The Islanders sit fourth in the conference's wild-card standings, two points behind second-place Pittsburgh, with a 25-22-5 record. Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello said Horvat will make his team better.
