Mayor Karen Bass reduced the hours that a nightly curfew in downtown Los Angeles is in effect on Monday, allowing struggling businesses to remain open later into the evening.

The curfew affecting the Civic Center, Chinatown, Little Tokyo and other nearby communities had been in effect nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Bass cited “successful crime prevention and suppression efforts” as the reason for the shift in the curfew’s start time.

Council members are scheduled to meet on Tuesday to consider extending the curfew covering a one-square-mile zone that Bass enacted in response to vandalism and looting during protests over the
