Meta has begun rolling out ads on WhatsApp for the first time, starting with its Updates tab. The move also includes channel subscriptions and promoted content, all outside private chats.

WhatsApp will be showing ads in the Updates tab which is used by 1.5 billion people every day across the globe.

Its a big change for the company, whose founders vowed to keep the platform free of ads when they created it in 2009.
