MADRID — It’s after 1 a.m. and I’m in a very long line for gelato. Usually, this would aggravate me. Who stands in a gelato line at 1 a.m.? But on this particular Friday night, I’m enjoying the fact that after-hours dessert is even an option.

The explosion occurred near a bar in a building on Manuel Maroto Street in Puente Vallecas, Madrid, at around 3:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, Sept. 13, according to initial reports from the Madrid Emergency Information Office (MEIO) on X.
