Notre Dame was in desperate need of a break after its 31-24 win over Louisville, which meant the bye week came at a perfect time. The Irish had won its third straight game, but the Irish were scuffling a bit offensively and it was becoming a very banged up football team.

Notre Dame opened the season with a 23-13 victory over Texas A&M in College State, Texas, before falling in its home opener to Mid-American Conference school Northern Illinois, 16-14, in a stunner for the Irish.
