The main indexes closed solidly lower in reaction, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 0.4% to 42,156, the S&P 500 shedding 0.9% to 5,708, and the Nasdaq Composite slumping 1.5% to 17,910.

Oil futures headed higher on Friday, with Brent prices on track to post a gain of more than 9% for the week, as tensions in the oil-rich Middle East continue to flare in the wake of Iran’s missile attack on Israel earlier this week.

President Joe Biden on Thursday told reporters he was discussing possible Israeli strikes on Iranian refineries, further unsettling the market.
