CINCINNATI — As Cincinnati Reds starter Hunter Greene took the mound in the ninth inning at Great American Ball Park on Thursday, holding a 1-0 lead over the Chicago Cubs, he couldn’t help but think back to his April 7 start in San Francisco when he’d come one out from his first career nine-inning shutout.
Greene got the final three outs for his first career nine-inning shutout as the Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0 to keep pace with the New York Mets for the third NL wild-card spot.

The last fastball Greene threw, his 107th pitch of the night, registered at 101.5 mph, according to Statcast. A splitter and a slider later, he struck out Ian Happ looking to complete the second shutout of his career and his first of nine innings.
