A large asteroid strike on the Moon could have negative consequences for the artificial satellites we now depend on. That being the case, a NASA-led team has looked into the options for preventing Asteroid 2024 YR4 from making such an impact in 2032.
Astronomers are considering blowing up the “city killer” asteroid, estimated to have a small chance of crashing onto the Moon in 2032, to cut the risk of the collision debris destroying satellites. The near- Earth space rock, dubbed 2024 YR4, was previously thought to have a small chance of impacting Earth.
Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost mission successfully makes a Moon landing, marking a milestone for NASA and its commercial partners.

NASA's Artemis 2 astronauts practice moonwatching | Space photo of the day for Sept. 22, 2025
Before they head to the moon in 2026, the four Artemis 2 astronauts have to practice observing Earth's nearest neighbor.
Asteroid 2024 YR4, once perceived as a threat, is no longer on a collision course with the planet Earth. However, there is a small chance of hitting the moon, creating a lunar impact.2024
Asteroid 2024 YR4 currently has a 4% chance of smashing into the Moon in about seven years. Astronomers are already working out ways to prevent a potential impact.
As of Tuesday, Sept. 23, the moon phase is Waxing Crescent, and according to NASA's Daily Moon Observation, there's just 3% visible tonight. Once again, there isn't enough of the moon being illuminated by the sun, so there's nothing for us to see tonight.

The Moon is getting slightly farther away from the Earth each year − a physicist explains why
So the bottom line is that the gravity of the closer tidal bulge on the Earth is pulling the Moon forward, which increases the size of the Moon’s orbit. This means that the Moon gets slightly farther away from the Earth. This effect is very gradual and only detectable on average over years.
For the first time, NASA’s astronaut candidate class includes someone who has already been to orbit, and is majority women, as the space agency focuses on its goals to send humans back to the Moon and onto Mars.
