According to a recent report from Bobby Marks of ESPN, Brunson’s decision to take $12 million less could have an important impact on Mikal Bridges’ future with the team. He noted that because of Brunson's contract, it gives the Knicks the room to sign Bridges to a four-year, $156.1 million extension.
That’s an issue for the Knicks, who have been hard-capped at the second apron now two years in a row. If the Knicks reach extensions for both Bridges and Robinson, the payroll will check-in at $226.2 million. That’s $2.6 million below the old projection — and close to $4 million above the new one.
The last year of his contract is expected to be a player option. If the Knicks were to extend him, they would be paying Towns, who will be in his mid-30s, an average salary of $75 million.
