HONG KONG — A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck near one of Tibet ’s holiest cities Tuesday, killing at least 126 people, Chinese state media reported. The earthquake, which was recorded just after 9 a.m. (8 p.m. ET Monday), was centered at a depth of nearly 6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
A strong earthquake jolted Kathmandu early morning on Tuesday (). The earthquake measuring 7.1 magnitude on Richter scale was recorded by the National Earthquake Measurement Centre at 6.50 a.m. Tremors were also felt in Bihar’s Madhubani.
Tremors were also felt in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, as well as Bhutan and northern India. China says about 1,500 fire and rescue workers have been deployed to search for people in the rubble.
More than 1,000 homes were damaged in the barren and sparsely populated region, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
