Volkswagen ID.4 production ends in Chattanooga as VW shifts focus to Atlas. An electric successor may return, possibly rebranded as an ID. Tiguan.
The ID.4 was well-received when it debuted in 2021, and the model had a mostly strong 2025, selling 31 percent more than the year before. But sales of the electric VW collapsed after the Trump administration abolished the clean vehicle tax credit at the end of Q3 2025; the next three months saw ID.4 sales fall by 62 percent year over year.
Volkswagen will continue selling whatever is left in the ID.4 inventory until it runs out, which they expect will be sometime in 2027. “The EV market continues to challenge the industry, requiring measured decisions throughout the last few years to navigate this unpredictability,” Volkswagen said in a press release announcing the decision.
Volkswagen has announced they are stopping ID.4 production at the Chattanooga plant. This comes as the company wants to prioritize the launch of the new 2027 Atlas.
What stands out first for this 2026 model is its price. It starts at $54,492 for the entry-level Comfortline 4MOTION, while our range-topping tester costs $64,492. There’s also the more rugged-looking Peak Edition, which costs $58,492 and the mid-trim Highline, which will set you back $61,492.
Volkswagen is hitting pause on one of its most important electric vehicles. The automaker just confirmed it will stop producing the ID.4 at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant in mid-April, bringing an end to the automaker's first true attempt at a mass-market EV in North America.
