Jamaica, Hurricane Melissa and Bahamas

Hurricane Melissa was hitting eastern Cuba hard early Wednesday after slamming Jamaica as a Category 5 storm. Maps show its forecast path.
Melissa's top winds weakened to 90 mph, down from 185 mph, which were the second-strongest ever reported in an Atlantic hurricane. The storm ties for the strongest storm to hit land, along with the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, which hit the Florida Keys, and Hurricane Dorian in 2019, which hit the Bahamas.
Melissa is forecast to become a major hurricane within days. Although the exact track is uncertain, some models bring it close to Florida’s east coast.
Melissa strengthened into a major hurricane and is expected to bring "catastrophic" flash flooding and landslides to Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
