The hurricane brought heavy rain, widespread flooding and winds close to 100 miles an hour to the central and southeast Bahamas.

Its intensity at landfall appeared to tie an all-time Atlantic Basin record. But the devastation in Jamaica wasn't all Melissa brought to the Caribbean. Here is our recap of this historic hurricane.

Hurricane Melissa is barreling northeast toward the Bahamas, after leaving a trail of destruction across Jamaica and the eastern side of Cuba.

Hurricane Melissa cut through the southeast Bahamas Wednesday and is expected to pass just west of Bermuda by late Thursday.

The storm killed about 20 people in Haiti and flooded more than 160 homes. Five bodies were found in Jamaica, and one person died in the Dominican Republic. The U.S. State Department has asked the military to assist with disaster relief efforts.

Hurricane Melissa made a second landfall in eastern Cuba near Chivirico just after 3 a.m. Wednesday as a major Category 3 hurricane.

Melissa is now a Category 1 moving through the Bahamas after the storm made a historic landfall in Jamaica as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes in history.
