Communities in Watauga County hit hardest by Hurricane Helene have taken to helping each other as they wait for outside help to arrive.

Hurricane Helene wrecked the community of Vilas in Watauga County. From the air, we saw several mudslides. The rain washed away a couple of sheds on a property, sliding them down the mountain. We saw two different roads washed out and what appears to be a driveway that was wiped out in another area.

The damage wrought by Hurricane Helene was especially extensive in western North Carolina, a region far from the Florida coast where the system made landfall as a Category 4 storm. Nobody was expecting the Blue Devils to be 5-0.
