Horror movies are often one-week wonders at the box office, but Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” is defying the odds and proving to be true event cinema.

“Sinners,” which director Ryan Coogler filmed using Imax cameras, has been a force on premium screens. In Imax alone, the movie has added $12.3 million worldwide over the weekend, boosting its overall tally to $20.6 million. Those ticket sales represent 19% of the film’s overall gross.

If any lesson, or rather a reminder, is to be taken from the success of “Sinners,” it’s to stop counting out Black stories. You’d be surprised by how many people show up and show out for them.
