M4 Westbound closed, queueing traffic due to police incident from J21 M48 to J23 M48. Congestion to all the way back to J19 (Bristol), and the M5 is very slow back to J17 (Cribbs Causeway) as drivers seek an alternative route.

Police were called to a concern for welfare incident on the M4 near Bristol this afternoon (Friday, October 4). The motorway was shut in both directions between junction 21 and junction 23. The incident was first reported shortly before 2pm and a diversion route was put in place via the M48 Severn Bridge.

Delays are building on the M4 in Bristol after five vehicles crash on the motorway. Traffic is queuing between junction 19 and 20, at the Almondsbury Interchange, following the collision at around 8.40am today.

The eastbound junctions of 23 and 22 have been closed in both directions with live traffic updates predicting the busy stretch will not reopen until after 4pm. A statement from National Highways said: "The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge in Gloucestershire is closed in both directions due to an ongoing police led incident.
