Last week, CVS Health confirmed it planned to cut 2,900 jobs, mostly in corporate roles. The 632 noticed Rhode Island layoffs represent 22% of the total planned job cuts.

More than 600 employees who work out of CVS Health’s Woonsocket headquarters, including 80 state residents, will lose their jobs in December, according to a notice filed with the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training on Sunday,

The company announced on Sept. 30 it was laying off nearly 3,000 people nationally as it seeks to cut $2 billion in expenses and explores breaking up the company.

Only 153 of the terminated employees work at the Woonsocket headquarters or surrounding facilities while the remaining affected employees work remotely, reporting to leaders in Woonsocket.

CVS, which is based in Rhode Island, has about 300,000 total employees, 9,000 retail locations and more than 1,000 walk-in clinics, as well as health insurer Aetna, which is headquartered in Hartford, Conn. It’s one of the largest private employers in New England.

The layoffs will be focused on corporate jobs, not frontline pharmacy, retail, or distribution workers, but more dramatic changes could be coming soon.

CVS filed a WARN notice with the state that it intends to lay off 153 jobs based in RI and hundreds more remote jobs that report into RI.
