U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is offering substantial pay, student loan forgiveness and other benefits, drawing the ire of some local officials already struggling to hire and retain recruits.

Law enforcement operating in California, including ICE, will be prohibited from wearing masks in the state beginning January 2026.

Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed new laws to restrict ICE at schools and hospitals. A similar California law shielding courthouses from immigration enforcement shows the new measures may be difficult to enforce.

The case is filed on behalf of four plaintiffs, including three who were detained by ICE at 630 Sansome Street. There, according to the filing, immigrants are kept in "freezing," filthy cells that lack beds, sometimes for several nights, with the lights always turned on, resulting in sleep deprivation.
