If New York does win the American League East, they'll most-likely hold the top spot in the AL for the postseason. The Seattle Mariners are 86-69 and at the top of the AL West and the Detroit Tigers are 85-70 and at the top of the AL Central, although the Cleveland Guardians are just a game back in a tight race.
The Yankees will take the field on Tuesday night in Minnesota with a five-game deficit behind Toronto in the AL East. With the Blue Jays holding the tiebreaker over the Yankees, that number is actually six games.
"We're working to shake hands (after victories) and put ourselves in the best position heading down the stretch," New York manager Aaron Boone said. "It's on to the next one. (Saturday) becomes super-important, too."
