Rory McIlroy lashed out at the toughest golf course in the country Friday as Oakmont Country Club continued to bare its teeth at the 156 men competing in the 2025 U.S. Open. Though McIlroy was hardly the only golfer to be frustrated by the difficulties he faced in Western Pennsylvania, he was perhaps the most demonstrative of the bunch.
The 156-golfer field will be cut down to the top 60 and ties before the third round begins, which is different than the top 70 and ties used as the cut line by the PGA Championship and British Open and top 50 and ties at The Masters.
The U.S. Open 2025 is underway with 18 holes in the books after Thursday's first round at Oakmont Country Club, the highest-ranked private course on the Golfweek's Best state-by-state list.
Former Ohio State golfer Maxwell Moldovan shocked everyone when he eagled the Par 4 first hole of the U.S. Open on Thursday.
